Sir Alex Ferguson has put the frighteners on Real Madrid, and won the first major psychological battle by threatening to use FIFA to stop the blatant public courting up of the Man Utd hitman.

United have been so annoyed by Real’s “tapping-up” of Cristiano Ronaldo, that they warned that world football’s governing body would be alerted. That threat appears to have had the desired effect as Real president Ramon Calderon was forced into an unbelievable back down, stating that his club had no desire to encourage Ronaldo to leave.

Calderon was advised by fellow high-ranking officials at Real to stop commenting about Ronaldo for fear of a FIFA rap. “We have not interfered with United’s contract agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo,” said Calderon.

“I want to clear this up and assure them we are not going to influence any player to break a contract.

“We’re not going to start a conflict. If a club does not want to sell a player, then why would we insist that they do sell him?”

Despite Calderon’s claim that Real will only make an offer for Ronaldo if the player wants to join them, United know the Spaniards are doing all they can behind the scenes to make the move happen.

With Ronaldo having stated his desire to one day play in Spain, the steady drip of flattering comments towards him from Madrid are designed to turn the player’s head sooner rather than later, and the majority of this has been orchestrated clearly on behalf of the Spanish champions by their Sports paper alliance, Marca.

Real Madrid’s desire to land Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is such that they even have a club car ready and waiting for the Portugal star, Marca sports daily reported on Saturday, clearly in another attempt to try and unsettle the Manchester United front man. It is now clearly becoming an obsession of Real’s to get Cristiano to go over and play in La Liga.

“Is that the definitive proof?” asked Marca, headlining a photograph showing a brand new top of the range Audi, along with a handwritten notice on the dashboard bearing the legend: “deliver to Cristiano Ronaldo”.

Another notice includes the words “sponsorship Madrid,” implying the motor is destined for the club, with which it has a sponsorship agreement.

According to Marca, the vehicle is in an Audi parking lot in Spain.

There has been feverish speculation for weeks in the Spanish capital that Ronaldo, having now led United to the Premiership and Champions League double, will quit Old Trafford for the Bernabeu although he has four years left on his existing contract.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on Friday launched a stinging attack on Real, accusing the Spanish champions of ‘lacking morals’ in their attempts to lure Ronaldo.

The Manchester United manager is furious at statements made by Real coach Bernd Schuster and president Ramon Calderon questioning whether Ronaldo really wants to stay at Old Trafford and accused them of attempting to unsettle his player.

“The simple facts are that he is with us and has four years left on his contract and that’s the first thing. And Calderon makes that great statement ’slavery was abolished many, many years ago’. Did he tell Franco that? Jesus Christ, give me a break.

“Do you not think we’ve not had many interests from the big clubs in Europe about our best players? Of course. But they don’t get into the nonsense that they (Real Madrid) get into. And they’ve no moral issues at all. They think that they can ride roughshod over everyone but they won’t do it with us.”[ad#john1]

Sir Alex Ferguson firmly believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s immediate future at United is secure, but he says future Reds success in Europe is vital to keeping the prodigious Portuguese winger at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo has four years left on his current contract, but Sir Alex admits a time will come when the player has a “big decision” to make over his future.

United clinched a dramatic third European Cup in Moscow on Wednesday and Sir Alex says improving that record even further will be a crucial point in persuading Ronaldo to extend his stay in Manchester even further.

Real Madrid continue to make the world aware of their interest in Ronaldo’s services with Real coach Bernd Schuster and president Ramon Calderon both expressing a desire to see the winger at The Bernabeu. But Sir Alex remains unflustered, as he should having just won a league and European Cup double.

“You get used to it with Madrid,” said the United boss on Friday. “Schuster’s talking and Calderon’s talking. Real think they can ride roughshod over everyone, but they won’t do it with us. They have no moral issues.

“In terms of great clubs, Barcelona have far better morality than Real Madrid will ever have. Real use this Marca newspaper as a vehicle to unsettle players.

“Do you not think we have had many expressions of interest about our players from big clubs in Europe? Real Madrid are not the only club interested in Ronaldo. But the others are not saying so. They don’t get into this nonsense.

“The simple fact of the matter is that he has four years left on his contract and he is happy

“Of course, the players you want to keep, you have to work hard to keep,” added Sir Alex. ”That is a fact in the modern era. He is 23, when he gets to 25 or 26 he will have a big decision to make. That will be our biggest task when he gets to that age.

“It’s about how big we become and how big we are then in terms of European trophies. That European success will resonate with him. That’s why I make the point about us striving to be better at winning European Cups
